Instructions on Using Polaris for WWW space
Using UMPI Personal Networked Storage for Your WWW Space
Each faculty and staff member at UMPI has personal networked storage space.
This storage space is mapped to the N: drive, and may be used for
storing files and WWW pages.
The process of publishing to the WWW via your personal storage
space is composed of just a few steps:
For PC users:
-
Create your WWW page(s), and store it on your hard drive. [C:]
-
Using Windows Explorer, check to see if there exists a directory "WWW"
at the top level of your N: drive. If not, create it. This N: drive is
your personal space to store files on the network.
-
Using Windows Explorer, check to see how much space you have available
on the N: drive. Right-click on drive N: in the left-hand pane, and select
"Properties". Available space is limited.
-
Copy the page(s) to the N: drive, into the WWW directory.
-
Start Netscape Navigator, and check the page using the following address:
http://www.umpi.maine.edu/~userid/pagename, where userid
is your login name on Polaris and pagename is the file name of the
page. Using .htm or .html as the ending of name of the page
works best.
-
Edit the WWW page(s) as necessary, and recopy them to the N:\WWW directory.
For Macintosh users:
Macintosh users have this space, but it is not accessible from the Macintosh.
You must create your documents on the Macintosh, then take them to an IBM-PC
compatible, log in, and transfer them to your personal networked storage space.
This is a technology limitation which may change in the future.
