If you develop a large powerpoint or other type of presentation on your desktop computer, you can transfer it to a portable computer for presentation by temporarily copying it to the L: drive on your computer. The L: drive is an alias for a volume on the network file-server Polaris. Once you plug-in and startup the portable computer in the presentation area you can copy the file from the L: drive to the portable computer after it is attached to the network. Users must manage their use of the L: drive. Its space is limited (about a gigabyte) and it is read/writable by everyone with Polaris access. To avoid the space filling up you should delete your files as soon as possible after using them. Also, when the space is full, you will have to delete other files to make room for yours. Be careful about deleting recent files that someone else might expect to find there. Do not save your only copy of a file to the L: drive. If you do, you'll be sorry! If using Windows 95 or greater, you may navigate to the L: drive using the Network Neighborhood icon on your computer's desktop. The Network Neighborhood path to the transfer space is: \\polaris\transfer\transfer If using Macintosh, you'll need to use your chooser to login to Polaris and mount the TRANSFER volume. |
