Instructions for Using Classroom/Conference Internet Access
A computer connected to a classroom/meeting area internet-port functions similarly to the computer in your office in regards to accessing internet resources. Audio/visual services offers laptops and portable computers which can be reserved by faculty, staff, and students. See a list of Internet Capable Classrooms to determine whether or not a communications outlet is available in a particular classroom/meeting area and to view diagrams explaining precisely where communications outlets used to connect your computer to the network are located. Please utilize the following procedure when using internet access in UMPI classrooms/meeting areas:
- Before attempting to connect, verify that the computer being used to connect to the internet meets the minimum computer requirements.
- Before turning on the computer, find the wire with two ends resembling a phone plug. Find the red dot on the communications outlet and plug the wire into the jack closest to the dot.
- If using a laptop, plug the other end of the wire into the back of the computer in the area that resembles a telephone jack receptacle. The Computer on Wheels may already have this wire plugged into the computer.
- Attach the power cable to the electrical receptacle. Plug the other end of the power cable into the computer if necessary. Most laptops will have a three prong electrical cord which is easy to locate.
- Turn the computer on and wait for the login box to appear. You must enter your login id and password before Polaris resources can be utilized. This happens automatically when you start your office computer but may not occur with a portable computer. If login doesn't occur automatically you will need to enter your username and password if the login window appears. If you want to utilize Polaris resources and a login box doesn't appear, you will need to attach to the network by selecting the "Network Neighboorhood" icon from the Windows 95 desktop. Logging in isn't necessary if you are using Netscape only or an application which relies solely on files from the local hard drive, a floppy disk, or a zip drive.
- Windows 95 will load and the user will have access to the desktop. Select the appropriate applications and launch them. The portable computer may not provide access to all the same software packages you're accustomed to. The portable computer may not function like your office computer. It is advisable to check out the portable ahead of time to make sure the software you need is accessible and familiar.
- If you are unable to connect make sure that the wire connecting the computer to the communication outlet is firmly plugged into both ends.
- When you are done using the computer shut down Windows 95, unplug the wire attaching the computer to the communications outlet, and unplug the power cord.
