E-mail lists allow email to function as a group discussion system. Instead of sending email to one person, email is sent to an email list address. The magic genie (the list processor) in the network forwards a copy of the email to everyone who is subscribed to the list. The major benefit of a list is that it requires only one address (the list address) be used to send email to a group of people.
Email lists are created upon request from faculty or staff. The requester is responsible for performing minor list maintenance; e.g.,maintaining the subscriber list, setting list options, etc. CS provides training for these tasks.
To view a list of all UMPI email lists, subscribe to a list or request a new list, visit
the Email list management system. Type your full Internet email address in the box labelled "Your Address" and click the "View/Change" button to view all lists.
To send email to a list, use the list name followed by "@whope.umpi.maine.edu". For example, if you'd like to send an email message to all staff on campus, you can use the "staff" list address "staff@whope.umpi.maine.edu". All staff will receive a copy of the message.
There are also thousands of Internet email lists on different topics. Check out the official catalog
