Other Hardware Policies

Purchasing

Computer Services reviews, approves and coordinates all campus computer hardware purchases. Computer Services is not responsible for maintaining or configuring University-owned computer equipment that is acquired without Computer Services approval.

Requests for new equipment or equipment upgrades must be accompanied by funds to cover the cost of purchase and installation. Requests for new equipment or upgrades must be approved by the TSAC (Technology Services Advisory Council). Requests to the TSAC should be submitted on the Technology Request Form to department coordinators or supervisors.

Maintenance

All maintenance of Computer Services equipment will be performed or supervised by Computer Services authorized personnel. When maintenance is necessary it will be scheduled at the earliest possible opportunity, considering personnel and funding resources

Disposal of equipment

Determination of the obsolescence or need for replacement of any Computer Services equipment will be made in cooperation with Computer Services. The removal or disposal of any such equipment will only be performed by Computer Services.

Hard disk use

A user with an office computer that is equipped with a hard disk is responsible for his/her own data back-up and security. Difficulties caused by non-Computer Services provided or approved software may require that the software be removed from a machine before further assistance or network services can be provided.

Moving of equipment, including removal from campus

If Computer Services equipment is to be moved from it's place of installation, arrangements must be made with Computer Services before the equipment is moved. The equipment, computer network and user's data may be damaged or destroyed by improper transport techniques.

In cases of hardship permission by may be granted by TSAC for home use of Computer Services equipment. The following guidelines apply to such use.

  • The user of the equipment must be prepared to move the equipment back to campus for any necessary maintenance. Contact Computer Services for moving instructions before attempting to remove equipment to another location.
  • Any instruction or software training will be conducted on campusand the user will be responsible for any reinterpretation of procedures for home based machines. Consultants may be available to provide training in the home at the user's expense.
  • The user of the equipment will be required to purchase any extra software or hardware necessary for home use of the equipment.
