Computer Services maintains several general-access shared directories, or
folders, on its network file servers to make it easy for users to transfer
files with each other. Faculty or staff may use the L:\ drive
to transfer files with other faculty or staff. This space may be accessed
either from within programs by saving documents to the drive, or
from within Windows Explorer, which you can use to copy or move your files.
Don't confuse this with your department's H:\ drive (if you have one).
Many departments on campus have permanent shared space that is only
available to the
members of the department. The "Transfer" space (L:) is available to
all faculty and staff.
Keep the following principles in mind when using general-access
shared directories:
- Do not copy sensitive or private material to these areas. Everyone
can see it!
- These areas are meant for temporary storage of documents
and data. Computer Services' routinely deletes, files left
in this area for more than one working day.
- Computer Services can not guarantee the integrity of data stored
in these areas. DO NOT PUT YOUR ONLY COPY OF A FILE IN A GENERAL-ACCESS
SHARED DIRECTORY. You will be sorry!
